A Sustainable Development Project

In 2007 Oliver’s House purchased 11 acres of land in Putfontein, Benoni, with the aim of developing a “sustainable village” which would be home to a wide variety of social services.

Services

The concept of Oliver’s Village is unique in that in its completed state it will provide the following social services to the local community of Daveyton:

Renewable Energy and Food Security

All the services at Oliver’s Village are managed within a self-sustaining environment. Organic farming and renewable energy resources are used to provide all the food, power and water used at the village:

  • Photovoltaic power station – provides the electricity;
  • Biogas digestor – converts human waste into gas, used for cooking and heating water;
  • Borehole and rainwater harvesting – provides all the water;
  • Food forest and vegetable farm – provides fruit and vegetables consumed by the beneficiaries in our early childhood development centre and soup kitchen;

Enterprise Development

Three enterprise development projects have been created. These projects will provide both business and employment opportunities for the local community:

  • Home Bakeries;
  • Waste management;
  • Agri-business.
